Experience

Prior to joining the legal profession, Mr. Chan worked in the fields of education and commerce. He started off his legal career as a lay court prosecutor in the Attorney General’s Chambers of the Hong Kong Government in 1980. He later joined Johnson, Stokes & Master, the largest law firm in Hong Kong and Sinclair Roche & Temperley, a British international law firm. He is in private practice at Chui & Lau which he joined in 1995.

In his 35 years of legal practice, he has assisted clients from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Mainland China, South Korea, Japan, the UK, Canada and the USA in a wide spectrum of legal work. His involvement in China-related legal work dates back to 1986 and he has since been in active practice in the China market representing both mainland-based clients in their investments overseas and foreign clients in their investments in mainland China. He has played a key role in many of his clients’ projects : in 2003/2004, he was the lead counsel for the foreign investors in the negotiation and bidding of the BOT project of Line No.2, Nanjing Mass Transit Railway; in 2014/2015, he acts as the chief negotiator and legal counsel for the seller in the sale of a telecom services business in China to a major international telecom corporation.

He serves as a non-executive Director on the board of a group of companies which are engaged in such business in Hong Kong and elsewhere as apparel business, multi-media production, cinemas, events ticketing, dairy products, electronic payment systems, properties, assets management, hedge funds and financial services.
